How to Improve Home's Wi-Fi Signal in Five Minutes

AT&T - United States

Have you ever heard of radio waves? Wi-Fi is no different thing, it is just radio waves. There are a lot of things that can create problems for your home’s Wi-Fi. But if you need faster performance, you need a strong Wi-Fi. It also means that proper positioning and configuring your router for optimal signal strength is very important. It will not take more than five minutes.

Point the Antenna Up

Most of the routers have adjustable physical antennas. When you buy a new router and open the box, you find the antenna pointed horizontally. But you need to position the antenna of the router vertically, for maximum signal strength. The two antennas of the router should be pointed in the same direction.

Position Your Router Properly

Position of the router is very important. For maximum coverage, find a place that is close to the center of your home or office. We often see people complaining about Wi-Fi signals. It happens when they position there router at one end of the building. But there are people who have positioned their routes at one end and don’t have any signal issues. If signals are good, you are not required to change the position of your router.

Never place the router on the floor. You can place it on a high shelf, if you want maximum coverage. Keep your router away from metal objects. Wi-Fi can be blocked by metal or stone walls. Plaster walls, on the other hand, does not create any problem. There are a few sources of interference. Microwave ovens and 2.4 GHz cordless phones can be a source of interference. There can be serious signal issues when microwave is in direct line of sight between the router and your computer. You just have to move any one of them in order to solve the problem. And if your 2.4 GHz phone is creating problem, you can replace it with a 5.8 GHz cordless phone.

Choose the Best Wi-Fi Channel

What if when there are different Wi-Fi networks in your area. One thing you can do is, move you router further away from the other Wi-Fi access points. For instance, when your router is placed in the corner of your room, there might be a router of your neighbor on the other side of the wall.

Switching to a different Wi-Fi channel is the best thing that can be done. This option can be accessed on the setting page of your router. You simply need to check the instruction manual of your router for instruction. In the web interface of the router, locate the Wi-Fi channel option and it needs to be changed to a different channel.

The Wi-Fi Analyzer app is best for this purpose which is used for Android phones and tablets. The app can help you choose a Wi-Fi channel by monitoring the Wi-Fi networks in your area or apartment. After monitoring the networks the app recommends the least-cluttered Wi-Fi channel. But iPhone and iPad users don’t have any app like Wi-Fi Analyzer.

In simple words, you just need to choose a good position to place your router and then optimize your network by choosing the ideal Wi-Fi channel. And you will not have any complaint about poor Wi-Fi signal.
